food recaps Twin Peaks

Food Recap Twin Peaks s01e03: Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer

I’m recapping all food from Twin Peaks! Spoiler alert…because there is SO much food it often overlaps with actual plot.

This episode is a less jam-packed with food than the previous two (although there’s still lots, including the introduction of the source of much Twin Peaks culinary-related shenanigans, Jerry). However, with Cooper’s Tibetan rock throwing and the introduction of the red room, it’s the Twin Peaksiest episode yet. Let’s do it.

We start with a scene of the Hornes having dinner that spans the length of the credits. I absolutely love the seating arrangement, Ben and [wife – name redacted because I can never remember it – unimportant – oh, Sylvia!] at the heads of a long table, Audrey and Johnny in the middle. This family pretty much hates each other and has nothing in common, and yet either formality or theatre keeps this scene going. I don’t even care that much about what’s on the table (some mixed veggies? Cauliflower, carrots, peas.) because of what happens next.

JERRY busts in. Jerry is one of my favorite characters. His nutty joie de vivre warms my black heart.

This is the best damn sandwich I ever ate. It’s a baguette, with brie, and butter…I ate four of these damn things every day I was there. You gotta try this.

Ben attacks this thing. This is also how my two-year-old eats tacos. With relish, from the middle.

You know what this reminds us of? Ben’s amazing line of creepy codependency and shared memory. And then a naughty joke on network TV which I enjoy.

We’re concluding last episode’s dinner at the Haywards with some huckleberry pie. I’m am quite impressed with this regional touch; I have often heard of but never eaten a huckleberry. This is a huckleberry.

Bar at One Eyed Jack’s. I’d like to order ONE double scotch on the rocks…and my brother would like a double scotch on the rocks.

Another classic Lucy donut spread, this time at the site of the Tibetan rock throwing gig. Sorry the image is a little blurry – the camera is panning pretty quickly from Lucy to the bottle of truth.

Cup of coffee! Hank exclaims. And he gets it.

Lucy: anyone for a warmup? They are so enthusiastic for that warmup! I love it.

An ever exuberant Cooper spits out the first sip. Damn good coffee…and hot!

The Haywards are eating pie at the RR after church when Audrey comes in and orders a cup of coffee. Donna goes over to speak to her – I really like the interactions between these two, they aren’t good friends but they have an easy way with each other and a kind of an understanding.

Do you like coffee? Audrey asks. Agent Cooper loves coffee. But Agent Cooper likes his coffee black.

Love it, teenage girls are the best.

[a brief non-food interlude – clockwise from the upper left] wtf are these heeled slippers?

And we’re back!

Harry, meet me for breakfast 7 am, the hotel lobby… Gotta love those Great Northern breakfasts. I know who killed Laura Palmer. And yes it CAN wait ’til morning.

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m hooked!
